1) Cooking theme -- Heavy emphasis on specialty cooking. During the
afternoon, scouts went from troop site to troop site to sample each
unit's specialty. By supper time we were full!
2) Careers -- Explorer posts were invited to set up displays related to
their career field and the scouts visited them during the weekend. The
really good displays got some attention but there were a lot of marginal
ones with nothing for the scouts to do. We had a couple of small aircraft,
the k-9 unit from the Police Explorers, a Post on horseback, the emergency
service post, the medical post (the young women got lots of awkward attention),
the communications post.
3) Backpack -- we hiked in about a mile and a half to initiate a new camporee
site at the local council short term camp. The staff finished installing the
new latrines only a few minutes before the scouts arrived. You could actually
drive to within about 200 yards of the camp but the road was hidden by contours
and trees so it felt really wilderness. Units did not know about the road
for a couple of years, after which they all wanted to bring their trailers!!
