One great camporee I remember was a conservation camporee. During the weekend
we planted over 2,000 trees and did a lot of work on erosion control. That was
years ago but on a recent visit I noticed that the area where we worked on
erosion was a beautiful grassy area with picnic shelters for camp visitors.
I don't know how all the trees did, but a couple of the areas I remembered as
open were now "treed" and the planned windbreak was beautiful--I planted some
of those trees!
We also had some competitive events built around soil and water conservation
and each troop site had a square yard (3 foot by 3 foot area roped off) for
nature study--you would be surprised how much you can find in that size area
if you look closely.
There were also some exhibits put up by forest service personnel--"Smokey"
was rumored to be expected but did not come.
