Let me add my two cents to this.
As an adult staffer at the Jambo, there really isn't that much I can do in
my free-time, activities-wide. I usually leave the Action Center stuff for
the kids, and am too old for merit badges, and am not a big trader.
I have made it a point to go to the Enviromental/Conservation Areas at the
Jamboree. Last jambo (89) I was able to go to most of the displays there
(and get the pins/patches/whatever too- but that was never the purpose of
going). This last year I was able to hit everything. This year several of
the groups did the same EXCELLENT set up as before, ie Corps of Engineers
and the Soil Conservation Services' BIG set up (they came out to the site
several months early to plant stuff so they would have a garden for the
jamboree!). The mining set up by Phelps-Dodge, were you can pan for gold
and stuff was great. EPA had a big multi-station set up. And again I earned
a patch at the Virginia Forest service display (you earn it by filling a cup
with water shot from an 'indian fire pump' in 10 secs. 3 jamborees and a patch
from each one!).
The US Forest Service really outdid themselves this time. Even without the
`lure' of the patches, I would still do it. I loved the added touch of having
an official National Forest sign saying `Entering Jamboree National Forest'.
I took a photo of it and many who saw it thought it was a real National Forest.
I hope they do something just as good next time, and maybe the stuff they did
will influence the other groups as well.
