The Poultry Keeping merit badge required "2. Understand, through
experience, rearing, feeding, killing, and dressing birds for market."
I've quoted this from a March, 1927 (thirty-sixth) printing of the 1911
Second edition of the Handbook. This requirement was still in effect as
late as 1954 (the 1954 Hand book uses exactly the same words as above.
I think this squares exactly with your findings. BTW, the 1927
printing has a statement to the effect that killing for sport alone is not
