Family Living MB

I just sent the following out to the rec.scouting newsgroup and
thought that I would share it here. It was in response to a leader
bemoaning the fact the some of his younger Life scouts may be
required to get Family Life. Anyone else have any opinions on this?
Or amy I way off of the boat?
In the past when National has changed significant requirements (such
as First Aid MB required for First Class and the skill awards), there
has been some "grandfathering" done so that those currently in the program
don't get hurt. For instance, my oldest son joined scouts when First Aid
was required for First Class. For him, and all of those boys who joined
during those years, that badge is STILL required for First Class. National
will (I'm sure) check the dates. When I got my eagle ('68), I had a choice
of Soil & Water Cons. or Cons. Nat. Resources because I was during
the transition years.
There are many ways that National could grandfather Family Life MB:
1) ALL boys who join a troop before 9/1/94 are NOT required to earn the MB
2) Any boys who are LIFE rank before 9/1/94 are not required to earn it.
3) All boys have a 2 year grace period. Anyone earning Eagle during those
two years has an option to use/not use Family Life as a 12th required badge.
Anyone after the two years (9/96), MUST earn Family Life.
I would encourage all scouts who are not really close to Eagle to earn the
badge anyway. This way, should they drag their heels (as most do) there won't
be any problem when they eventually come to their Eagle BofR. I do something
similar with First Aid MB. At camp this summer I required all of the first
year campers to take the classes for First Aid MB. They all earned it, too.
Of course they took care of all of the T/2nd/1st class first aid req., too.
I hope my opinions are not TOO far off.
