Dear Friends and Fellow Scouters --
This month celebrates my 20th year as an Eagle Scout! Back in September of
1973 I joined the ranks of Eagle becoming the 30th Eagle in Troop 315,
Tendoy Area Council (Now Grand Teton Area Council), Pocatello, Idaho!
I just returned from vacation to Pocatello (visiting relatives) and took the
opportunity to visit ol' Troop 315. They weren't having a regular meeting,
but a TLC. They welcomed me with open arms and treated me as a VIP! They
showed me the Eagle Journal where they were now up to 165 Eagles and had me
sign next to my name. They showed me the Eagle Honor Roll where all the
Eagles names were painted on the wall with a picture next to the name. My
picture was missing so I promised to find one and send it to them! Also on
the walls were the token canoe paddles from Camp Little Lemhi complete with
signatures of all the boys who attended in that paticular year. I found my
signature under 69, 70, 71, 72, and 73. The boys presented me with a Little
Lemhi 93 camp patch and a Commemerative 25 year neckerchief and said I was
always a member of the Troop and could go camping with them anytime.
I saw that my Eagle project was still making an impact as the Troop still
maintained a color gaurd presenting the 'Flag History' presentation I wrote
to service groups and elementary schools.
I found my trip back in time to be very rewarding, almost inspirational in
remembering the good times I had as a Boy Scout, the friends I made, the
skills and values I learned. The boys asked me what in Scouting helped me
the most in my life -- Hard question, but easy answer! The basic two mottos
of Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting can be applied to every day life.
Always -- 'Do Your Best' (Cub Scout Motto) in everything you
Always -- 'Be Prepared' (Boy Scout Motto).
Building on those two principles you'll almost always be successful.
I enjoyed my time back in Pocatello, and encourage anyone to take time to
visit their old troop or pack! It may make a difference on how you are
viewing scouting now. Remember we do the program for the KIDS. (I say
kids, because of the coed scouting in areas outside of BSA) Its for THEIR
benefit, not ours!
In Scouting, I became an Eagle and will always remain an Eagle.....
