Our second year Webelos den was invited to join our local troop in in
launching model rockets last year. All in all, it was a quite safe
and enjoyable activity, although there is always the potential for
injury. Comments and lessons learned:
Choose a good launching spot (large, flat open field, no combustible
materials nearby). I felt the highest potential for injury was when
the scouts ran after the rocket parachutes.
Have plenty of adult supervision (we had about one per launcher and
this worked fine). This is probably most important.
Make sure the rockets are used appropriately (e.g., launched
vertically!), and that hangfires are dealt with by an adults.
Otherwise, have fun!
