(Yeah, yeah...I'm STILL catching up on mail from many moons back....)
Mary Lee, Carol, Jim Holman, and Kathie mentioned things related to a
"national polar bear award" that could be earned either in the winter
or during early morning hours at summer camps.
The awards, folks, is NOT A NATIONAL AWARD....it is a local Council
award, originally started in our northern and northeastern Councils to
present to boys primarily that are silly (!?) enough to swim or get
into the lake, stream, pool, etc., during the winter or anytime the
temperature is below freezing. It has been adopted by many Councils
and formalized so much that many felt that this was something that
National has "sanctioned".
Nope, they have not.
There is a generic patch which is available through the Supply
Division which features a polar bear on a white background...I have a
blank on and one that my Woodbadge Troop created for those Scouters
that took a swim during the weeklong course in the wee morning hours.
There's not a supply division number on that patch per-se, but this
weekend (in addition to cleaning up the office room for incoming
guests....), I'll find the numbers so that you may order your own if
you would like to. The cost of the patches are around $1 each, as all
stock blanks are....
