Greetings to all,
Since several people have made comments upon their summer camp week,
I thought that I would, also. I might have done this sooner had I not
returned from camp on 7/24 and turned right around on 7/25 to leave for
a family trip.
This year I had 11 boys and 3 leaders. The past three years when I took
the troop to camp I had over 25. Of those 11 boys, 7 were first year campers.
The other four had either 3,2,or 1 years at camp previously. By the way,
I also had 4 scouts on staff. I believe (change that to know) that this
was the best of the four years. Each day we had the highest inspection
scores in the camp, 102 the first day and 105 each of the other days (we
get 5 bonus points for in-site improvements). The boys also won the camp-wide
water polo tournament. Not bad for a bunch of 1st year kids. We also have
a First Year camper program (we call it Beavers) where the scouts are
encouraged to hit every program area at camp so that they get a good flavor
of everything. They get an award (a neckerchief signed by all department
heads) at the closing campfire if they complete 75% of 3 of the 5 areas.
Each of my Beavers got their neckerchiefs. I had one scout get a BofR for
his Tenderfoot (my son) and have 2 others ready for another BofR for T & 2nd
Class, with 2 more for SM conferences and BofR's. Also each of those busy
Beavers earned 3 to 4 MB with 1 of them earning 6 (+1 before camp) and
my son getting 5 and a partial (he just couldn't catch those fish). All in
all, a lot of accomplishments for those young fellows.
And of course, it couldn't be done without cooperation and help from the
older fellows who did (good naturedly - I hope) grumble a bit when they
were asked to review the Beaver books and sign handbooks each night.
And my special thanks go out to the 2 other adults who were with me all week.
We all made a good team.
