Personally, I would not accept alter service for service time for a few
1. In our unit, all service time must be pre-approved by the SM (to get the
boys use to the process when they start on their Eagle project).
2. In my mind, a service project has a defined goal, a start and an end.
Although I could commend the boys for their involvement, I would not
accept the alter service as such....I would accept their assisting in
formal training of other alter servers tho since that has a defined
goal, a start and an end.
3. Likewise, I would not accept choir service, band, etc. If you will,
these things all ring of 'a routine service or a service performed
by others' to paraphrase the Eagle Project requirements.
4. The hours needed for the requirements are not that tough that the
boys can not come up with a service that is 'all their own'.
