***** WARNING -- This is a Soap Box message *****
Why, may I ask, is it that too many Adult leaders, in this case DE's forget
two basic principles of Scouting:
Cub Scout Motto -- Do Your Best
Boy Scout Motto -- Be Prepared
If there was anything that carried more with me in my life from Scouting it
would have to be these two simple principles. What does that mean?
'Do Your Best'
In everything I do, I should do my very best within the capacities that God
has provided me with.
By nature I, which is probably why I do well as a Project Manger, plan
everything. Vacations for our family are planned as far as a year in
advance. My success in my job, my family, and in scouting has been
partially because of prior planning, which includes planning for the
unexpected -- Being Prepared!
So am I wrong in assuming that the people who are paid to operate this large
organization we call the BSA (I cannot speak for any other Scouting
organization other than this one) should be held accountable to these two
I find it very hard to believe that a person whose attitude is 'I did the
job!' when asked to insure mailings have been taken care of and they are
received by the recipients 5 days after the event, really did his best!
I find it hard to believe that a person in charge of a camp would not have
verified sanitation (KYBO's) facilities were not a health risk, if he was
really 'Being Prepared'.
Am I wrong, but is the attitude of the DE going down the drain in any other
councils? Is the objective of soliciting funds, incresing numbers and units
so great that the idea of quality is being flushed down the drain.
It bothers me that there is such light scrutiny on following regulations
a) A Pack is allowed to campout at a Council sponsored camp with inadequate
b) A leader with a record of child molestation can become a leader so
easily (Quote: We knew he was, but we needed leaders so bad and it
several years ago that he had his problem. EndQuote)
c) A DE would actually recommend packs pay gas funds for a parents
scouts, even though this constitutes 'car for hire' and nulifies
Is 'being an example' no longer a valid argument? Do as I say, but not as I
I have no answers, only the need to vent some anger and frustration. I seem
to be barking at a stone wall when I bring these concerns to the higher ups
at our Council. I'm just very much concerned that its going to take a major
injury at the expense of our children to enlighten people that 'Doing your
Best' and 'Being Prepared' are more than slogans, they're a WAY OF LIFE!
Along the Scouting Trail you'll meet.....
