I recently returned from the best summer camp (Will Rogers Scout
Reservation) our boys have attended in several years. All of the
boys seemed to enjoy their week at summer camp.
The camp was good for advancement as well. All of the boys not in
the first class program earned(!) almost three merit badges each.
The boys in the first class program completed a substantial
number of their requirements.
I attribute a lot of this year's success to the ranger, the camp
director, and the program director.
WRSR always has been an outstanding physical facility. The ranger had the
camp in the best physical condition I have seen for at least ten
years. The camp director and the program director worked together
to give the boys an outstanding program and an excellent long term
camp. The results hid the fact they started their jobs less than
two weeks before camp started. Obviously, they were last minute
substitutions for people who resigned.
All staff members appeared to be qualified to teach in areas where
they were assigned. Staff members were available to help the
boys at times other than formal class hours. There were times set aside
for boys to catch up when they felt they were behind on a merit badge.
Two staff members had to be fired because they would not stay in their
areas to give help at non-scheduled times, but this made a point
with the rest of the staff. They stayed where the campers could find
them to get help.
All in all, summer camp was an enjoyable experience for the boys
in the troop AND the adults.
