This ia an addendum to John Beaumonts posting :-
While his WEBELOS were at camp last week the Scout Leader of one of
our local Troops, who is also the waterfront director for camp, did
a very heavy selling job of his troop to the boys. When I talked
to two of the boys after the final camp fire the both said that
they wanted to join his troop. My problem with this is two fold
1) The leader is in my opinion takimg unfair advantage of the
fact he is employed by the council to "steal" boys from other
2) While the Scout master is important it is the TROOP and the
way it operates - is it really run by the boys? is the patrol
method used? etc that is the most important.
IMO This troop is NOT the best troop for the boys to join it
is dominated by the scoutmaster and while they may do
fun things they are not really Scouting.
There are at least two other troops I think are superior to
this troop (including our sister troop). I echo Johns
question how do we get the boys to see past the
"glitz" of the Scout master and really understand
that it is the boys thaty make the troop?
