It is short=hand for "co-education"
Here in Italy it doesn't just mean "putting boys and girls together".
It means education (in the scout meanong of the word, not the school one!)
to living together with the opposite sex. The main problem (especially
with teen-agers) when you start to have Scouts and Guides doing activities
together is that they tend to fall in the same stereotypes (sp?) society
offers them. Boys tend to think of girls as something to "conquer" and
try to leave all "womanly things" (such as washind the pot the Patrol
used to cook) to them, while girls try to do the opposite.
To do something about this, the example of the leaders is the first step.
We usually have a male and a female leader in charge *together*, with none of
them in a predominant position.
The other problem is, of course sex. In this, maybe, we are influenced by
being a Catholic association, but since sex is a *fundamental* part of a
couple's life (as affirmed in many church documents, BTW!) the boys and
girls should know it exists, and be helped in put it in the right perspective
(i.e. do it at the right moment).
Hope it helps.
