Hi all ... I'm back from Philmont and have a few things to share with the
First, I got to meet with a few big-wigs including Bob Birkby the author
of the current edition of the Boy Scout Handbook (Got my copy autographed).
Second (of more interest to the group), I found out that the requirements
for the Eagle Rank are changing. They are adding a new merit badge in
addition to the current required list of 11. That is there will be now
12 required merit badges for a total of 21. The new merit badge is
"Family/Home Living" or something like that (I looked in my 89-91 copy
of BS Requirements, but could not find it). The way it was put was that
there use to be a "Citizenship in the Home" merit badge that this one takes
the place of.
Third, the requirement of "Show Scout Spirit" is being spelled out a little
more. They said something along the lines that a scout should have lived
up to the Scout Oath and Law in his everyday life.
Finally, there is an emphasis on have all troops be at least 32 scouts
strong. The patrol method can really only work in larger troops. The
National people are working on scouting's image in the US. They said a
TV campaign would be too expensive to use (to the tune of at least $8 mil)
and will concentrate at the local and school level. We are its best sellers.
The course I took at the Philmont Training Center was called "Working With
Junior Leaders". The instructors were really outstanding and the course
material involved learning about the current Junior Leader training material
as well as Council JLT courses and Philmonts's JLTC. We also explored
all facets of using your Junior Leaders.
If you ever get a chance to attend a Philmont Training Center course, GO!!!
It is a wonderful experience.
Oh I almost forgot .... I did get to dial in from Philmont once. I had so
much email accumulated that my disk allocation filled. I tried deleting some
stuff, but ended up deleting ALL my email. If anyone sent me some private
email over the past week, please resend it. Sorry about the problem.
