I am very pleased to hear that you completed Scoutmasters' Fundamentals. In a
recent posting, you must have read as I did, that the Scoutmasters'
Fundamentals is the ONLY course allowed now to be counted toward your Scouters'
Training Award (the knot of SA (the abbreviation for asst. scoutmaster). It
truly does not matter what Calumet Council calls the course, as long as they
use the sylabus for Scoutmasters's fundamentals. In the years gone by, Calumet
has been specifically noteworthy for their training, so I would expect them to
have done this correctly.
Now -- I point out that Fast Start training AND basic is required for your
units' Quality Unit requirements for the Scoutmaster and all assistance
scoutmasters. In 2 councils I know of: Northeast Illinois still REQUIRES the
viewing of th Fast Start video even AFTER attendance at SM Fundamentals. This
is true, I just had my SM and several other leaders attend their council course
(total attendance 73 with only 2 SMs; 2 CRs; as all SMs are trained; mostly
committee members) and Northeast Ill would NOT issue the completion card for
the basic until PROOF of the viewing of the Fast Start video: Chicago Area
Council agrees with the National professionals opinion (as well as volunteers
at the national level who write these courses) that full attendance at the SM
Fundamentals covers (in more detail) all the information in the Fast Start
tapes (a position I agree with completely) and thus if you complete basic, you
automatically complete Fast Start. Look for a change in the near future on the
Fast Start requireme
nt from National.
Thanks for taking time for the boys -- in the end it will be more than worth it!
