Camps in the Adirondak region of upstate NY also have a simular
problem with BEARS, racoons, SKUNKS, squirrels and chipmonks.
All "smellibles", to include your tooth brush and leftovers from
meals and trash etc., must go up a tree in a proper "BEAR" bag.
We had one pack ripped open anyway. Apparently some thing had
been carried in the outside pocket in the past, and maybe it
had leaked or otherwise left a "SMELL" on the pack. Fortunatly
the pack was left OUTSIDE the tent, under a pack cover, and only
the cover and the outside pocket of the pack were ripped apart.
For the rest of the trip, that pack went up in the trees, with
the bear bags. It is far better to be SAFE than sorry.
Even though Momma bear taking her babies for a walk thru the
base camp, makes a cute picture, daddy bear is not so cute
when he and his buddies turned over the camp DUMPSTERS. They
have now moved the DUMP and use even larger dumpsters, and the
bears still MOVE them arround! These are NOT YOGI bears!
