Truly sorry you feel that way. The position is not a trading post, it is a
legal position for a boy entitled, Librarian. That is where the MB books are
kept, and kept up to date. The MB counselors, of course, buy their own. Many
boys also wish to purchase their own, and of course, that helps the drain on
the troop library.
Scoutmaster Fundamentals, Boy Scout Leader Basic Training, and indeed even the
old Cornerstone, all have sections on the troop positions. I will rarely
suggest a solution that is not already in the program, unless one has tried it
and it has not worked.
i.e. your troop has a troop library and a troop librarian, and with 14 boys and
growing, you can not keep up with the demand on your library. Then, I would
strongly suggest that you, as SM, upon signing the merit badge card to approve
him working on that badge, tell him where to buy a book.
However -- and remember, I have been working in very poor areas in Chicago for
the past four years -- many of those boys don't even have families, no less
funds so a troop library's need is easy to determine, funding has been by
charter organization donation; matching funds from registered adults employers;
fundraising projects, such as car washes, etc.
Since merit badges are supposed to worked on individually, it would be unusual
in your size troop to need more than one of each of the required badges, and to
add to your library on an annual basis, those books that are most needed per
the actual working of your boys.
It seems your troop is working on merit badge, other than at summer camp, and
that is a giant step towards the success of the boy and your troop. It is
quite amazing how many troops do not even attempt to encourage badge work
outside of summer camp, or if you are about to turn 18 and need them for Eagle.
Hope this clears up my previous message to you and others.
