Not so. The sylabus for Scoutmastership Fundamentals incorporates the current
troop operations plan. Some of those changes include the troop organization
(adding the New Scout patrol and Troop Guides as well as Venture Crews/Varsity
Teams), Troop meeting plans (separate skills instruction for different skill
levels), and inclusion of a new (and ponderously long) video tape on the
Scoutmastership Fundamentals is the only course which will qualify a Boy Scout
leader as "Trained." It isn't just for Scoutmasters. Assistants and committee
members should take it, too.
BTW, if your training is from before Jan '90, you are currently untrained. There
is hope, however. There is a special sylabus for those who were trained prior
to the introduction of the Fundamentals course that covers the differences.
Contact your district training person for more details. I still recommend
taking the Fundamentals course, though.
On another note concerning the training requirements for the training awards...
Basic training, for the purpose of the Boy Scout awards, is Scoutmastership
Fundamentals. The additional training requirement may be met using any other
formal training sessions such as Woodbadge, Show and Do, Train the Trainer, and
University of Scouting. For the Cub folks (we haven't heard much from you guys)
basic training is called Cub Leader Basic Training in any of it's three forms.
You must have attended for your current position (den leader, Webelos Leader, or
pack administration). The additional training requirements may be met by
attending Pow-wow, University of Scouting, Train the trainer, Cub Leader
