Mike, I'm not confusing "varsity" with "sports". I am referring to the Boy
Scout Handbook, Tenth Edition. In Chapter 29, titled _Venture_and_Varsity_
Programs_, the distinction between Venture and Varsity in the troop is very
clear. It simply says: "While the Venture program focuses on ultimate
adventures relating to the outdoors, the Varsity program gives older Scouts
the chance to get involved in sports."
It describes in detail the difference between the two programs. The Varsity
section is quite specific. It IS a sports program in the troop.
The chapter says that "Older Scouts are free to move back and forth between
Venture and Varsity opportunities." Both programs as designed for the OLDER
scouts, not as you described. It also says that both groups may be Co-ed.
Now, in the next chapter, Chapter 30, titled _VARSITY_SCOUTING:_Program_for_
Teams_not_Connected_with_Troops_, describes the Varsity Team just as you
described to us. It is for "young men who are at least 14 but not yet 18
years old and are available through organizations charterred by the BSA to
deliver the Varsity Scout program."
Information I've read in the Scoutmaster's Handbook and Juntior Leader Handbook
support what I've read in the BSH. I don't have any other sources of material
better than these, so this is all the info I have. I have never heard of any
program from BSA like the varsity program you described.
BTW, Mike, I'm not flaming, I just want to be clear on what we're talking
Ok, that's all I've got. Enjoy
