I just got a copy of the latest requirements and application forms for
the Hornaday Awards for Distinguished Service to Natural Resource
Conservation. This is BSA publication No. 21-107 and is the 1992
printing. There are some changes to the requirements. Most obvious is
the list of merit badges to be earned. Let me summarize the new merit
For the Bronze Medal: "Earn the Environmental Science merit badge, at
least three of those shown in bold type, and any two others listed."
For the Silver Medal: "Earn the Environmental Science merit badge,
those shown in bold type, and at least three others listed."
The following merit badges are shown in bold type: Energy,
Environmental Science, Fish and Wildlife Management, Forestry, Public
Health, Soil and Water Conservation.
The other merit badges listed (in regular type) are the following:
Atomic Energy, Bird Study, Botany, Chemistry, Fishing, Gardening,
Geology, Insect Study, Landscape Architecture, Mammal Study, Nature,
Oceanography, Plant Science, Pulp and Paper, Reptile Study, Weather.
Basically, some additional merit badges were added to the list (Public
Health, Atomic Energy, Chemistry, Fishing, Gardening, Landscape
Architecture Plant Science, and Pulp and Paper). The other
requirements have changed a bit (at least from my previous version of
the requirements which I see were dated 1985!), but their net result
seems to be pretty much the same as before.
