I am sorry for your personal experiences with those who have worked so hard
and long for the boys in our movement. I received my Silver Beaver in 1987
and continue to work, as 90% of the people I know that hold this award do.
At a point in time, our council too was overrun with "has beens", people
who were being awarded not on today, but a generation ago accomplishments.
Now, that is NOT wrong, as you seem to intimate, but a balance of "old and
new" has always been the successful way of our movement.
How does it change from what you see in your council? Volunteers,
nominating those who are working hard today and who, as many before me and
after me and I have said upon receiving this award, "NOW I have to start
earning this -- what I have done so far is a drop in the bucket."
And so I continue -- as do thousands of others -- I personally do not even
wear the awards on my uniform -- that is not what I am here for, but it
NEVER hurts to feel like you are making a difference! And I usually do, no
By the way -- I have NEVER put myself in for any award, even the training
awards - however, there are those who care enough to do so!
19 years of service to our kids and movement.
