I belong to Toledo Area Council with Mary Lee and have been involved with
Scouting for Food the last 4 drives. Her stats sound like what I remember
(thanks, ML) but I beg to differ on the "minimal Girl Scout participitation"
that may be the way it appears to her DE, but I know there were significant
numbers of GS troops involved in SFF and the grand party that is held the
day of pickup at Camp Miakonda scout camp. Last year they had a banner
contest with the SFF drive and there were LOTS of GS troops that participated
in that as well as Cub packs. The Council party is great!! Businesses donate
food and volunteers set up a monkey bridge and all sorts of displays and
so far the weather has been great for April.
We have much GS and Cub cooperation at our school. Mostly due to the
overlap in leadership, but it usually turns out well for us. The last
SFF drive we had the Cubs pass out SFF bags and the Girl Scouts collect
them. Previous drive it was reversed. Initially we arranged it because
the Girls had a camp out planned on one weekend, but still wanted to
participate. This worked out VERY WELL for all (except those of us who
have one cub, one GS.....I still got stuck with two weekends of work!!)
In 1991 our council had SFF in November and April for a transition. Now it
is only April. Usually on the same weekend we also do park cleanup service
projects!! (which we also do with Cubs and GS troops).
The girls also are planning their second Pinewood derby this spring (borrowing
the Cub track and setup supplies).
Happy holidays!! Joan
