I was also faced with that the first time I was invited to Philmont
Training Center in 1978. I made both, simply changed the week at Philmont,
which we have a right to do.
Also remember, Philmont can (and in many cases does) send you an invitation
every year, all you need to do is tell your D.E. to put your name down next
year when the form comes into the council and VOILA! another invitation to
Philmont. In fact, in most cases a call to Philmont around April or May
gets you a slot on a course if there is room remaining (and there generally
However -- Cub Scout Wood Badge is, as Boy Scout Wood Badge began -- an
invitation only course. You can not call up and get an invite; you can not
expect to be invited every year. However -- again -- if you wish to put
off C.S. Woodbadge this year, just tell your D.E. and District Training
Chairman and ask that they put you on the request from next Fall when it
comes in from the Region and VOILA!! another invitation.
In any case do NOT take C.S. Woodbadge and then go directly to Philmont
Training Center "TTT or admin course". That is what I did in 1978 and
believe me the Philmont course was a very pale shadow of the C.S. Woodbadge
course. I love Philmont Training Center and have been there in 1978 - 1980
- and 1991. I hope to return. It is an experience beyond none. VERY
unlike the experience the boys and leaders have in the Scout side of the
reservation however --- very very different.
I recommend you go to one in 1993 and ask to be invited to the other later.
My preference would be Woodbadge in 1993 and Philmont Training Center every
year thereafter. And I believe I have only missed one year since 1978 in
getting myself invited to Philmont.
Whatever you decide -- it is not too hard to solve -- just stay in the
program and you can do it all --
