Kathie...please be careful here....there are LOTS of professionals out
there that will SHUT THE DOOR on volunteers that "get too close" or
"tell more than you are supposed to know".
You are correct that as volunteers, we have an obligation to inform
and involve others into what is going on "up the road" at the Council
Service Center. However, I beg to differ with you that this is
something that ALL volunteers should know about.
Many times, a "good-intentioned" volunteer will be asked to leave the
Council if somehow they keep the Council from doing "things as usaul".
They see this as not being "loyal" to the Scouting movement and to the
local Council in particular.
To make a long posting short, failure to "go with the flow" may cost
you service as a volunteer (and some SE/CEs hold that fact over your
head and shoulders). There should be NO PLACE for such action in our
program, but as I've written several times, the volunteers hire those
professionals to adminster the program in accordance with National
guidelines and the policies of the local Council.
And the policies of the local Council is what drives the train.
If a local Council (and this happens a whole lot, mostly in the South)
has a policy whereby a community will have two Scout Troops or two Cub
Packs, each serving a racial group and is for the most part
inexclusive of the other unit, and you come in, realizing that somehow
this is wrong and attempt to organize a unit whereby ALL members of
the community will be welcomed as members or leaders; YOU are treading
on thin ice because the policy is there....this has been going on for
years and you can't change it.
Tell someone about it, even in another District, and you can find
yourself in lots of trouble with the local Council and asked to find
volunteer service elsewhere.
