"Way back" when I was a Cub Master, the cubs & webs all got a pattern
and specifications to build bird shelters for the Eastern Blue Bird,
the State bird of NY, and not that common any more. With the help
of the local conservation office, we located sites to install the
"houses" for the blue birds. The next year, they even went back to
check to see if the shelters were used, and she if there was any
evidence that the user, was a blue bird (like blue feathers)..
The immediate success was not tremendous, but one or two dens were
at least able to photograph a blue bird!
This year, I heard that they are building BAT houses to install
near swampy areas, where the are over populations of insects etc.
I think the bat house plans were in some BSA publication.
I can check with the new CM, if anyone wants more info.
