Dan Beard Council and the Great Rivers and Licking Valley Girl Scout
Councils, along with the Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries, are looking for used
Boy Scout and Girl Scout uniforms as part of their new Scout Uniform Recycling
Program. The purpose of the program is to develop a formalized system whereby
"experienced" Scout uniforms can be made available for resale through Goodwill's
retail stores and distributed to Scouts in need.
The group is asking the public as well as current and former members to
donate uniforms to the recycling program. Timing of the campaign is planned to
coincide with fall membership drives and program start-up. Over 20,000 young
people will join the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts this fall.
As an incentive for the program and in an effort to serve area
disadvantaged youth, the recycling program will make available a wider variety
of needed uniforms to these young people. Boy/Girl Scout departments at
Goodwill retail stores will be incorporated for the sale of uniforms.
Dan Beard Council has over 57,000 members in twelve counties in Ohio and
Kentucky. The Great Rivers Girl Scout Council serves over 23,000 members in
nine counties of Ohio and Indiana. Liking Valley Girl Scout Council has over
4,800 members in twelve Kentucky counties. Collectively, over 40% of their
membership are "at-risk" youth, minority and/or disadvantaged individuals.
Ohio Valley Goodwill Industires is a comprehensive rehabilitation
center which offers a variety of vocational training and support services for
individuals with physical, mental and social disabilities. Proceeds from retail
store operations support Goodwill programs serving over 1,500 adults annually.
