For those following the 'saga' of co-ed Scouting in other parts of the
The European Region of WOSM and the European Region of WAGGGS
will be merging into a single organization as soon as possible.
There has been increasing cooperation between the two, including a
joint annual conference, but each has kept its own committee structure.
At the last conference, it was decided to remove this unnecessary
The merged organization will serve all the 70 or so different Scout
Associations in the European Region: one for boys only, 15 for girls
only, and the remainder either 'joint' or 'merged'. The priority for
the region remains building up Scouting in central and eastern Europe.
In an apparently unrelated move, the Girl Guides Association in the
United Kingdom has changed its name, dropping the word 'Girl'.
A cartoon in the UK "Scouting Magazine" pictures a Venture Scout Leader
and (female) Venture Scout reading a newspaper: "I see the Girl Guides
are changing their name. If we're anything to go by, it'll be 20
years before its recognized."
