I was a ranger 2 summers ago. (summer 1991) Basically, I agree with
what Scott Begin said in terms of equipment being used by crews.
A few minor comments: Leather hiking boots were pretty common. While
certainly not the majority, they are still quite common.
All of my crews brought stoves with them to cook on. The most common
were Whisperlites, Peak I's, and I saw a few Optimuses. If you do use
whisperlites, make sure you have the tool for cleaning the gas nozzle
on it. A couple of my crews had trouble with it clogging, making it
really hard to cook.
finally, tents. Most of my crews used Philmont tents. Those that
choose to bring there own tents along had freestanding tents. There
didn't seem to be a prefered size, however, as the tents ran the range
of 3-4 man Eureka tents to single person (usually biking) tents.
