One of the older scouts in my son's troop has a good Scouting Spirit when
he needs to, the rest of the time he just has an attitude. I can hardly
blame him, if I had to spend any time with his father I would get one too.
Anyway, on the way home from this weekend's camp out the troop caravan
stopped at a gas station, I emerged from the station with my soda to
see Jack (not real name) standing with his father and smoking a cigarette.
It seems he had managed to control his habit just long enough to get out
of the woods. I didn't say anything because:
1. I wasn't sure if the Scout function was still ongoing and
2. He was standing right in front of his father at the time.
I'm not sure I'm looking for a solution or just airing a gripe. I just
hope Jack doesn't get put back into a leadership position where he
will be held up as a positive model for the younger Scouts.
