Change of Address

Mike Walton mentioned something in a message to APO-L that reminded me that I
was overdue on posting this message.
I have a new E-Mail address. For the last two weeks, I have been using my new
MCI Mail account to read mail. If you have my Compu$erve account listed
somewhere, it will still work for getting messages to me, but I won't be
checking it daily anymore (2-3 times per week).
I changed due to cost. MCI doesn't charge me anything to read mail, just to
send it. Combine that with an 800 number access, their preferred pricing
plan of 40 outgoing messages for $10 per month, and a better off line mail
reader, it was an easy decision. My Comp$erve bills were between $30 and $50
each month, and I was only reading one newsgroup. I doubt that my bills at
MCI will be more than $20 per month.
There are a couple of problems, though. First of all, their gateway to the
internet strips out most of the mail header, including the FROM: and SENDER:
lines. I cannot tell the original source of a message, everything comes as
the SCOUTS-L list. For this reason, I ask that you try to include a signature
at the bottom of a message so I know who is speaking. It doesn't have to be
anything fancy, name & E-mail address at a minimum. If you aren't sure how to
do this automatically, ask someone on your system. For whatever reason, it
doesn't completely strip headers from APO-L mail. As soon as I figure out
where to voice my suggestion/complaint, I will ask about getting this changed.
The second thing is that the capturing of mail to my computer isn't as fast.
For whatever reason, it takes twice as long as when I was reading mail via
CompServe using TapCIS. Tonight it took 30 minutes to download 37 messages at
2400 baud. Although this is making me seriously consider getting a faster
modem, I would appreciate if when quoting someone else's message, that you
take out some of the quoted material. I don't mind downloading long messages,
but when someone quotes the entire message to comment on the last paragraph,
it bothers me (as much the waste of network resources as the extra time
waiting to download it) to download it a second time. A Scout is Courteous.
The last thing is a bit of news. I have joined a troop here in Illinois. I am
an Assistant Scoutmaster of T-348 here in Oak Forest. It is really
interesting because I am now in the Calument Council and these guys have spent
a lot of time at Camp Betz (which is located about 15 minutes from my parents
place) and Wood Lake Scout Reservation (council camp operated by my old
council, about 45 minutes from my parents place). We have lots of activities
and I am enjoying myself immensely.
Yours in Scouting
