Yes, Frank is correct. There is a course titled, "Den Leader Coach
Seminar," and it is a 5 1/2 hour session. The sylabus for the course is
within the Cub Scout Basic Training Manual, no. 4100. However, this manual
is "at the printers" now and a new updated version is due momentarily.
Many councils put on this training session as part of their annual Cub
Scout Leader Pow Wow, so check into that first. Then, contact your
district training chairman for Cub Scouting, and ask if they have scheduled
a seminar in your district, or any other district in the council.
I have the training award for Den Leader Coach, and it was a fun job! It
also had alot of responsibility at times, 'cause our pack went into chaos
at one point during my term.
The responsiblities of the Den Leader Coach are:
The den leader coach is a key leader and is mort effective when working
behind the scenes.
The den leader coach furnishes den leaders with support, information, and
ideas. The den leaders run the den meetings. (The den leader coach does
The den leader coach works with the Cubmaster in recruiting new den leaders
and helping to plan the den and pack program. The Cubmaster is responsible
for the pack's total program and runs the pack meeting. (The pack committee
however make all decisions on the pack program, based on the Cubmaster's
suggestions and ideaa. The pack committee is reponsibile for approving or
not the program for the pack.)
The den leader coach works with the pack committee in many area.s The pack
committee chairman runs the pack committee..
Den Leader coaches do not actually "run" the pack, the pack meeting, or the
den meetings. However, the behind-the-scenes work done by this person is
vital, necessary, and important to the success of the pack. When there is
teamwork among all den and pack leaders, the result is unity, pack spirit,
and a quality program for the boys and their families.
Refer to Champter 4 of the Cub Scout Leader Book for additional information
on your position responsibilities.
The Cub Scout den leader coach has no direct responsbility ofr the Webelos
dens or Webelos den leaders. The Webelos den leader coach has no direct
responsbility fo the Cub Scout dens or den leaders.
The most important responsibility is giving immediate training to new den
leaders (via district training, fast start, etc.).
Let the den leaders know you are always ready to help. They should feel
free to seek your advise. (Therefore a den leader coach and/or Webelos den
leader coach should have served in the past as a den leader.) Always
consult den leaders in matters concerning thier dens before going to anyone
else. Establish a frank, friendly relationship.
You are a problem solver. There are numbers of case studies in the Den
Leader Coach seminar that give you examples of what you are in for.
The den leader coach does on-the-job coaching.
