More on CMU Nickname

Earlier this week, as part of the discussion on Indian Issues regarding the
OA, I posted a message indicating that at Central Michigan University, there
had been protests / objections to the Chippewa nickname, even though the
nickname was "not offensive at this time" to the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe
Well, when I picked up my paper this morning, I found that the nickname will
be kept. The board of trustees foted unanimously to keep the nickname.
Although this is a victory in my mind (and the first thing the board hasn't
screwed up in a while), I am sure there will be those Politically Correct
people out there who will not be happy with it. You can't please all of the
people all of the time.
I still believe that even if we consult the groups we are portraying, there
will still be the uninformed person who will protest the use of Indian
themes / ceremonies in the OA and the use of Indian mascotts by teams.
Always a Chippewa by virtue of a Degree from CMU.....
