Sometimes it all seems to be worthwhile !

This past weekend I attended our Section Conclave for the Order of
the Arrow. The camp is on a hillside overlooking a lake in the
fingerlakes region of NY state, and the weather was perfect, after
a rather poor summer in general. However, the camp and the weather
only added to the best part of the event. One of the members of the
Host Lodge, and a Eagle Scout, was awarded the BSA Medal for Heroism.
He and another scout were fishing in a rain swollen river, when he
saw a 4 year old boy floating past in the swift current! Needless
to say, ALL are alive an well today beacuse of boy scout training!
Then at the final ceremony, The National Youth Chief of the OA was
present, and gave a short motivational talk, kind of on CARPE DIEM.
He set down a challenge to all present that was very motivational
to both youth and adults. He then read from one of his favorite
books, on the topic of self esteme, and the be all you can be idea,
sieze the day, JUST DO IT ideas. A very powerfull talk from a young
man from Florida. By the way, his name is Shawn Cox, and the author
of the book, was Dr. Seuss!
To see what these scouts have accomplished within the scouting program
makes the bickering with some PRO staff, and other such "battles"
seem very trivial. It makes you realize that we are winning! There
are some very fine young men that scouting has helped to "become all they
can be", but cetainly not all they WILL be in the future. It makes you
feel like all the work and the pain was worth it!
AND, I even got a few new patches for my collection. What else could
I ask for. Well, there is a new OA flap from lodge 410 that I need. :)
