I just finished the practical part of the Wood Badge
course and thought it quite disconcerting that for
a lot of the practical skill sessions, we had to refer
to past issues of the Handbook. I understand the need
to make layout and media style current and 'fashionable,"
but a real hard look should be taken before getting away
from the Scoutcraft Skills that have been there from
the beginning. Sure, there's not a lot of practical use
for a monkey bridge or a Signal tower (unless someday
you are faced with a disaster situation and need to
bridge a stream) or to learn trail signs (unless you
want to teach Scouts to be truly observant).
