Sean, I agree with you whole heartedly when it comes to units that camp year
around. My reference was to those whose camping is limited to one week in
June or July. If a troop camps year around, and does patrol cooking on some
of those outings, then a dining hall summer camp is great. Those units
choose the dining hall for variety and for program needs. In my experience,
the whiners are usually the minimal camping units and the ones with excuses
for why they don't camp.
I firmly believe that all Scouts need a full range of experience--all
wilderness camping can be as bad as all resort camping.
I also have a problem with the units that always camp in the same place.
Scouts will be better prepared if they have a large variety of experiences
to draw upon.
