Another method that is similar to Jon. . .
Run piano wire from a tree to the fire, somebody is out of sight in
the tree and shoots a flaming arrow down the wire into the fire. The
sound of the arrow flying down the wire adds to the effect.
The kids have to be distracted while the arrow is lit, and later to
give the person in the tree time to escape.
Care must be taken during the lighting of the arrow, that the arrow
does not come off the wire, that the arrow stays lit, that nobody
stands up and touches the wire at the wrong time, that the person in
the tree does not fall out, etc, etc, etc.
For the burning part of the arrow try wrapping first aid cotton gauze
near the point of the arrow. Make sure it is all cotton and not some
of the plastic stuff, cause plastic tends to burn and drip and can
spatter burning pieces of plastic all around. Try dipping arrow in
coleman fuel/white gas, it needs to be burning vigorously so it
doesn't go out on the way to the fire.
