Addendum to liquid fuel debate

As an addendum to the issue of wood vs. liquid fuels, there was
concern that injuries can result from the process of gathering and
In the 15 years that I have been involved in Scouting, I have seen
only 2 injuries, both minor, resulting from the gathering and
preparation of firewood and from cooking fires themselves. This is
out of the myriad of ways boys find to hurt themselves, including
countless blisters, cuts from carving for the Woodcarving merit badge,
bumps and scrapes from tripping over roots/rocks/untied shoelaces, bee
stings, sprained ankles, sitting on stinging nettle (!) . . .
One of these two cases was an older scout teaching some younger scouts
on correct axe use. He said, "Here's how NOT to use the axe...ouch!"
