Incidentally, United Way support for the BSA has been rapidly decreasing even
without the problems in California. As I recall, a large part of the money
the Bay Area UW gave to the Councils was donated specifically for support of
the BSA and was *not* affected by the court decisions. Ultimately the UW
will cease to provide any major funding to the BSA -- other than specifically
pledged money -- whether or not BSA changes its policies. I personally think
more people will withdraw their non-specific UW pledges to give them directly
to the charities, etc., of their choices rather than allow the UW to continue
to mismanage the monies involved. Summary: the UW is a lot closer to shutting
down than the BSA.
In my opinion... Boy Scout Councils as well as many groups... have been TOO
dependent on organizations like the United Way to provide additional funding.
It was known to me almost 10 years ago that The United Way is one of the
most RESTRICTIVE and most mismanaged organizations around. My mother worked
with a local Epilepsy group who each year had LESS and LESS money and MORE
and MORE hassles from a local chapter whose director eventually was fired
for mismanagement of his funds. It is clear that if you want to donate to a
particular group.. then do so DIRECTLY.. The United way has one of the HIGHEST
administrative fees (which translates to HIGH OVERHEAD, etc). It DESERVES
to close down.. even tho alot of WORTHY causes will be hurt in the process.
Even tho Less support from the United Way will Tax an already overburdened
group of supporters...(meaning parents, local businesses, etc.) , in the
LONG run... Scouting will benefit since councils will be forced to find
alternative means to replace those funds or TRIM the budgets they already
have (not that we can afford that either, I KNOW that we have already
discussed the merging of councils AD NAUSEUM!!)
This INDEPENDENCE from the United Way should be encouraged within other
groups as well.. maybe when The United Way no longer has BLIND and UNDYING
support people will realize that maybe at one time it was a worthy cause..
but NO LONGER... I encourage you to GIVE to your favorite charity or
cause DIRECTLY.. AVOID the costly middle man. More of your dollars will
go to benefit those in need. Thanks for listening to my comments.
If you have some very flaming negative comments... send them to me directly.
Lets keep the list positive and thought provoking... NOT let it degrade
to the level of some of the posts in rec.scouting. Thanks again.
