ooops...the terminal here disconnected before I could finish!
The figure stated was for our statewide KECNET system. It allows all eight
of Kentucky's universities to interconnect to one another and it allows for
remote connectivity anywhere in the Commonwealth. For example, I can connect
onto my parent account from Murray State University (on the extreme western
end of the state). Allows for research at all of the schools, not just the
Unfortunately, our BITNET site runs through the University of Kentucky, 28
miles uproad. Loss of our KECNET connection with them means a loss of a
BITNET site, since the two are interwined. We don't have the money presently
for additional long-distance lines and our President is anti-computers and
computering. We don't look like we're going to make it; however, we ae
are in better financial shape then all of the other regional schools. We are
only getting a 5%cut in salaries as opposed to a 13%cut in some schools.
One of the regional universities is even losing their football team, a Division
1-A team (western kentucky).
I serve on our university's technology committee, and we received the bad news
three weeks ago. It was our last meeting and the meeting before our school
announced the cuts publically. We are asking students and staff to comment
publicly to our President and to our Vice President for Administration about
finding the money somehow...a good idea would be to get rid of some of the
deadweight (since I am going from here, I can say this safely! Could be *I*
am also deadweight, too.....) (*smile*)
In the meantime, students and staff have been told of the impending disconnectio
n, which not only affects our school but also Morehead, Murray and Kentucky
State, which all run their connectivity through KECNET and UKCC.
Hope that answers the concern. Yes, we *WERE* to become a INTERNET site this
school year.....hardware and later on money forced us to put it off....and this
will definately place it on the way back burner for at least two years (perhaps
