I finally got a definate answer from Philmont on Saturday--I'd been
accepted on staff! I know that most staffers had heard months ago, but I
originally wasn't availiable early enough and was put onto a backup list.
My job is in the backcountry on program staff--at a place called
Santa Claus. Funny thing is that I stayed a night there in 1990 and I remember
it mainly because we had to carry our water in and the only other people there
were one other crew. I guess they must have turned it into a staffed program
camp since then.
Anyway, the program there is "Mountain Technology." This includes, I
learned, teaching scouts how to use survey transits and Abney levels,
triangulate forest fires, measure moisture in the forest duff, reading weather
instruments, and learn the principles of astronomy. Sounds like a camp the
Forest Service would love. Guess that's what I get for putting down "pres
of astronomy club" on my application. :) (Not that I'm complaining...)
I read through the staff booklet they sent me and still had some
questions. I know there's some past and present Philmont staffers in the
group and I thought they could help me out.
For instance, we get one day off a week--I'm pretty far away from
base camp (about 7 miles away from Baldy, for those familiar with Philmont)
at least to hike there and back in a day. Is transportation availiable?
Will I be eating freeze-dried food all summer? (Philmont food isn't
too bad compared to other places, though)
How many uniform shirts should I have--I assume I'll be wearing the
Philmont staff shirt most of the time.
I'm an addicted patch-trader (and I'm giving up NOAC to be here!)
but will I have a chance for any trading since I'll be in the backcountry
most of the time? Is there much inter-staff trading?
On my days off, would I have access to a tent?--or should I bring
Thanks--and hope to run into some of you out there this summer.
