I'm a member of committee from Troop 64, Northeast Ohio Council, in
Painesville, Ohio; and former Cubmaster. We too usually go out of council for
summer camp but are staying home this summer to attend our local. Last summer
we went to Camp Rotary, Lake Huron Council, in Michigan. Rotary is about 100
miles northwest of Detroit and is a good size camp with 400 campers most weeks.
They have a good size lake which is U-shaped and some decent fishing. The
merit badge program is well run and they also have a good program for those
scouts under first class (this group even has an overnight hike as part of the
program). The campsites all have platform tents with cots, there are two
outdoor shower facilities, and showers for the adults in the basement of the
Most of the activity areas run programs after dinner and in general Rotary is a
well run camp. Although it was my first out of council experience the other
leaders who have all been to several camps in the States and Canada were also
impressed by the camp and its program.
I hope that we keep this thread going for a while because we are always looking
for recommendations on summer camps. The guide books put out don't always tell
the whole story.
