short introduction first:
I'm Alan Roney, Scoutmaster of Troop 56 in Cincinnati Ohio (Dan Beard
Council). I'm an Eagle Scout, member of the OA, Wood Badge trained,
and have been active in Scouting for 25 years. I went to Philmont as
a Scout in 1970 and hope to return sometime within the next 5 years
as a contingent leader.
I just found this group two weeks ago and have been listening in
since then. There are some good discussions - I'd like to start
For the past two years, our Troop has travelled out-of-council for
our summer camp. This year, in an effort to increase summer camp
attendance, we're staying in-council.
Next year, we would like to travel out of council again and we're
currently looking into possibilities. I'd like to invite you to
tell me about your favorite summer camps and why we should go there.
I'll start the discussion off by talking both about our council's camp
and about the camp we've attended the past two years.
Woodland Trails is operated jointly by the Dan Beard (Cincinnati ,Ohio)
and Miami Valley (Dayton, Ohio) Councils. It is located about 20 miles
east of Dayton near Eaton, Ohio. It is a large camp, designed to
operate with about 350 - 400 scouts. Last year's OA Conclave was held
at the camp and was also the first event to be held using the new
The camp features a large lake (about 20 minutes to go the length in
a canoe), a horse ranch, and a COPE course. About 2/3 of the camp's
acreage is unused. We will be attending camp at Woodland Trails after
two years of out-of-council summer camps.
Camp Babcock-Hovey is operated by the Finger Lakes Council (Geneva,
New York). It is located on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake near
Ovid, NY. The camp is about 55 years old. It is a small camp
(300 acres) designed to operate with about 200 scouts. Having grown
up going to a (now closed) small camp operation, I fell in love with
the place. IMHO nothing beats a small camp for having great Scout spirit.
Sitting on the shore of one of the Finger Lakes, B-H offers the standard
aquatics badges on a LARGE lake as well as Small Boat Sailing and
Motorboating. They have an excellent Field Sports staff, and very
good overall facilities and staff.
We combined trips to Niagara Falls and Cooperstown (induction day this
year) during our trips to Babcock-Hovey.
Tell something about your favorite camps - where are they, how big,
what special features, why is it your favorite ...
