Dear Brothers of Alpha Phi Omega and the entire APO-L network,
Explorer Post 1275, Wesley Foundation, Scouts, and
anybody else on my distribution list,
Plans are well underway for the 1992 RACE FOR THE CURE
which benefits the battle against breast cancer. The race, a 5K
run/walk and 1 mile fun walk, is scheduled for Saturday, June 20th,
and will begin and end at the rally site on 14th & Constitution
Avenue, N.W.. In this, its third year, the event is expected to draw
close to 20,000 race participants and raise over $700,000.
As you may know, breast cancer affects approximately 1 in 9
women. It is the second leading cause of death among women, with
only lung cancer ranking higher. The purpose of the race is to
increase public awareness about the importance of early detection
of breast cancer and to raise funds to support research and early
detection programs. The Vice President and Mrs. Dan Quayle will
help to promote awareness of the cause by serving as the
Co-Chairmen. The race will also have the support of Mayor Sharon
Pratt Kelly who has agreed to serve as the Honorary Washington,
D.C. Community Chairperson.
This is my second year recruiting volunteers to assist this cause.
This time, however, I am recruiting ANYBODY, not just BSA National
Capital Area Explorers as I tried last year, who can give a few
hours of their time to the event either pre-race or on race day.
Your assistance will help to ensure the event is once again a real
success - Plus, it's lots of fun (especially on race day).
Your help would be appreciated in any of these four areas:
*Office support - assist in clerical duties at the race office
*Flyer/Poster Distribution - distribute race brochures and
posters to retailers and corporations in your area
*Pre Race Registration - help man the pre race registration
and packet pick-up station on Wednesday, June 17th,
Thursday, June 18th or Friday, June 19th at Union Station
*Day of Race - provide assistance with packet pick-up, food
distribution, water distribution to runners or help at the
or the finish lines
If you will be in the Washington, D.C. area and would like to be a
volunteer for the RACE FOR THE CURE, please let me know. Please be
sure to include your T-shirt size (S,M,L,XL) so that a T-shirt
can be reserved for you.
