The current uniforms were designed by Oscar DelaRante (sp?) and sized along
the "Sears" sizing line since that was determined to be a good guideline.
The design (and all the pockets) was meant to make our uniforms fit into
the international picture (uniform) better. Yes - national AND the
National uniform committee (volunteers) had full input and control on the
In 1980 the new uniforms were announced and released and we have had
numerous changes since, because someone forgot how women and men were
actually (and in reality) shaped! Oscar really did not seem to know.
Everything in Scouting is controlled from the local level all the way to
the national level by like committees of volunteers. Thus, if you REALLY
want information on the history of our uniform, I can supply you with a
Scouting museum curator in Danville IL who should be able to help AND lead
you to numerous authorities in this country alone on uniform history.
I can also mail and/or fax you a great deal of info on the history of the
uniform. Whatever you would like? Please just let me know.
