If your council insists on the EXTRA (and mostly useless) uniforms,
try to convince them to let the contingent members order at BSA cost!
You would be amazed at what BSA pays for a pair of shorts, as compared
to the catalogue prices!! But, from past expience as a scout
particpant and leader. EXTRA stuff tends to be lost, or maybe even
traded! And make sure what is really required!! Most members of
87-88 WJ Austarialia US contingen bought the BLUE contingent t-shirts
and TOOK it with them. For some reason, some did not buy them, and
some that bought them did not bring them. Same for RED jakets!!
Therefore, the only option for UNIFORM occasions was full BSA uniform,
almost ALL the time. Even when it got cold on the way, or hot later on.
Also for scouts over 16, there is the Youth services staff and the OA
service corps! As a past SPL at a Jambo, and OA service, I would never
pick being SPL at the Jambo, with a leader that never left his lawn
chair! It was the worst 10 days of my Scouting experience! Youth staff
work a fairly easy schedule as compared to an SPL who was never allowed
a minutes rest!
'57 vistor, 60 scout, 64 spl, 69 OA/youth service staff, 81,85,89 vist etc.
plus two Canandian National visits, 67 & 87-88 world etc.
