I am a little late, but was out of my office yesterday. However, you
message on the "process" for defining a group as a religion elicits a
comment from me directly.
I have seen groups of young people taken to the hills in the name of
"religion" and hundreds killed in the name of "religion" and thousands
murdered because of their "religion", not to mention historical data which
shows a constant threat of "religion" upon man's mind!
1. The only "proof" a group needs to do is meet a criteria - that
criteria, and obviously you do not know that, is established by experts in
the field, not even registered Scouters. How narrow to think that BSA
would set up a handful of professionals and/or volunteers to set such
2. As I am sure you have been told by now - we do NOT only have christian
religions, and we do NOT isolate religions, we do however isolate fanatics
like Jim Jones. Budhism and Islam, Mohammed, etc. are all a part and have
awards for their members to earn - they in fact support our movement very
well here in the US.
3. The National committee that ultimately takes the weight for this issue
(if you would find and read the info available) is the
Membership/Relationships committee. Each council, each district, and even
National should have a relationship chair - check your district, and talk
with your chair.
Scouting is quite a movement! But, if it is done correctly, our boys in
the program have a great time, learn alot, but never ever see the adult
side of the movement nor what or how we accomplish it. Over my tenure in
Scouting (19 years) in the BSA, I have come to understand that men coming
into the adult roles in Scouting from being a Boy Scout, sometimes (I said
sometimes!) have trouble seeing the really IMPORTANT reasons and teachings
of this MOVEMENT. There is indeed a reason why we have always classified
BSA as a movement, not a club or organization.
Good to know you see this issue - now you have had the input of long
tenured scouters - hope your read the information provided. Check with
your own faith - see what they have to offer.
