scouters 1) We have also suffered from acidents and/or vandalism.
We tried to "SHORT CUT" the poblems as follows: We,
left a report of what happened, and HOW WE WOULD not
only pay for the repairs, but arrange for the repairs!
WE had the parents accept the bill in one case, but in
another, it was a true accident durring a game. SO the
unit paid. It wasn't really anyones fault, just an accident.
By the time the "AUTHORITY" found out about the accident,
repairs were in progress. If we treat the facility as OURS
and not JUST THEIRs, we can all work through these uncomfortable
2) Prayers : Having been with the OA for a long long time, I have found
many "generic" prayers from Indian cultures. Prayers that
express thanksfulness and brotherhood without invoking specific
beings, Such as Christ, GOd, Alaha, or others. Sometimes, the
Great Spirit is mentioned, but that can be SCOUT SPIRIT (?).
I do not have samples at my office, but can provide some if
would like specific INDIAN STYLE (not authentic) prayesrs.
3) OA adult elections, and Explorer changes. The ADULT SELECTION process,
NOT APPOINTEMENT of ELECTION has been in effect for some time! However,
as with many things (patch resrticion policy), invidual LODGES or COuncils
can ignore NATIONAL rules and changes!! The policy NOW provides for an
Adult to be nominated for membership based on EXPECTED SERVICE TO THE OA!
The OA council of chiefs or executive commitee (ALL YOUTH), review the
nominations and SELECT those best suited for service to the BROTHERHOOD!
APPOINTMENT is not a correct term. TOO many adults, in the past, were
"elected" as some kind of award. Most NEVER attended one OA function,
and many worn the flaps, without completing an ordeal weekend! (HEY I
WAS ELECTED, and I DID MY TIME 4). Those adults never earn brotherhood
and make the LODGE "CONVERSION TO BROTHERHOOD RATES" look bad. THE OA
IS A SERVICE ORGANIZATION, NOT AN AWARD!!!! I think the change has
worked well, where implemeted as intended. The youth officers of the
Lodge make the final determination, based on a NOMINATION resume for
adult. Those selected are expected to attend the ORDEAL and work
side by side with the elected youth. ANY that don't are dropped from
membership list, after two ordeal opportunities have passed! Men and
Women follow the same rules, and attend the SAME ORDEAL.
And MY opinion on the EXPLORERS rule change is that not that it DESIGNED
to keep out females under age 21, although it will, but that to prevent
missunderstandings, or hard feelings, MALES in the Expoler units can not
be elected, since the females can not, which would create a bad situation,
at the elections. Therefore, males that remain CROSS registered with a
TROOP, and are otherwise eligable for election to the OA, may be elected
as a member or a TROOP only, and not as a EXplorer. Therefore, the males
still have access to the OA, only the females under 21, reamin excluded!!
DOn, mostly better now
