As I last read the policy on Adult leadership, only one leader has to be a
U.S. citizen for BSA activities. I think but I am not sure, that this has
to be the one who is over 21 years old. However, in order to count as
leadership for the group, the second person needs to be related to one of the
scouts (parent was the word I saw) in the troop or registered in BSA. This is
one of the reasons I keep my wife registered, she is not a citizen of the U.S.
and probably never will be. But she likes to go on Scout outings and I enjoy
having her along. If we find our selves the only adults going, we are still
within BSA policy since she is registered (our youngest just turned 18).
I have to commend Kathie for speaking up. One of the single (female)
parents in our troop has specificly indicated to us that he needs MALE
influence to help him grow. (You can translate any way you want, I am just
repeating what she told me.) This is not a feeble minded person either.
We had some discussion in our troop about finding a new Committee Chairman
since I will be moving in six months. She was the first choice of all
envolved (SCM, ASM, Charter Organization Rep, and me - current CC). She
has accepted as CC because she wants to be envolved, but she still feels
boy needs the male influence on the front line. By the way, she is not
afraid of camping. She went with us on our canoe trip on Arizona's mighty
Verde river (all 132 cubit feet of flow). We were in tents. On the river
she and her son got caught in a strainer, and went over. He boy was under for
about 2 seconds which seems like forever when you are a parent, but the life
jacket poped him up to the surface. (Water was only 4-5 feet deep.) They
keep going. So I know she can handle it.
I do not believe anyone who says there is no differences between men and
women. I also do not believe anyone who says there is no difference
between you and me. Can women make great scoutmasters? The right one sure
can. Can men make great scoutmasters? The right one sure can. Which one
is best? You better point to individuals and ask that question, otherwise
you will end up thinking I am a politician.
