Your point that nationals flies all of the section chiefs to Texas every
year is incorrect.
As a 3 time member of the OA National Conference Committee and the 1990
CVC for Personal Development at NOAC, I would like to point out that national
does not pick up a single dime of the expense to bring the 50 or so Section
Chiefs to this meeting. Around October prior to the meeting, a notice is sent
to each of the section chiefs inviting them to attend. In most cases, the local
OA section or local lodge picks up the airfare expense of attending. There is
also a fee to attend the meeting to cover such costs as the hotel room, food,
and other miscellaneous goodies which comes to about $100 (the costs in 87,88,
and 89). Some sections also pick up this cost as well, but others do not. I
personally had to pick up the fee for the meeting.
Nationals does offer free travel arrangements and conference fees to the
committee members who complete their obligations they accept at the meeting.
THIS IS NOT AN EASY UNDERTAKING! I spent at least 200 hours of time (89 OA
Philmont Trek) up to about 500 hours (90 NOAC) putting the program together as
I accepted at the National Planning meeting. For anybody who has ever attended
a NOAC, you may see amazing things happening, and this doesn't happen by
accident or coincidence. It is the result of the hard work of the National
